Starting a Dropshipping Business from Scratch

One of the questions I get asked daily is, "If you were starting from scratch in Drop Shipping, where would you start? What route would you take?

Would you do Amazon, Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Poshmark, or something else?

Would you focus solely on retail Drop Shipping with organic traffic, or would you run ads? What would the strategy be, and most importantly, why?"

This is an important question that can help many of you. If you're unsure where to start or what the best method is, I want to briefly touch on why I would do what I would do and the benefits and drawbacks of each approach.

First and foremost, as a beginner, I would start with retail Drop Shipping in some capacity. This method doesn't require spending money to acquire customers since you can leverage the platform's organic traffic and buyers to make sales. I'd focus on learning platforms like Mercari, Poshmark, and TikTok Shop.

I would bulk list products on platforms like Mercari and Poshmark using a tool like Zdrop. Bulk listing with Zdrop doesn't take much time at all. You can either do it yourself (consider it an hour-a-day side hustle in the beginning) or outsource it to a cheap virtual assistant since almost anyone can do it by just clicking buttons on software.

After that, I’d cross post those same listings to other sites like Kidizen, Facebook Marketplace, Depop, and more using List Perfectly. This process doesn't take much extra effort because you can do it with just a click of a button, morphing all those same listings over to other websites.

Simultaneously with Mercari and Poshmark, I’d also start Drop Shipping on TikTok Shop. While Mercari and Poshmark are solid, reliable places where you can make a few thousand dollars a month pretty quickly, TikTok Shop is hands down the biggest opportunity in e-commerce right now. You can scale it fast and succeed big.

Of course, it takes a bit of trial and error, but once you figure out how to find hot-selling products and make videos that convert viewers into customers, you can replicate that over and over again.

This, in my opinion, offers the best way to build a consistent income fast while also getting the added upside of something like TikTok Shop, which has a ton of leverage and scalability. This way, you’re not spinning your wheels trying to find a winning product for Shopify or spending months and thousands of dollars on ads trying to learn what a good product is.

Instead, you'd have profit in your pocket every month from retail Drop Shipping. You can then use some of that profit to test and run ads on Poshmark or even on your TikTok Shop products, or pay a UGC creator to make videos for you.

In my opinion, this is the ultimate approach for beginners. Jumping straight into higher-leverage business models like Shopify can be risky, even though the upside is there.

Starting with something more proven, easier, and simpler, with zero financial risk, ensures you're making consistent profit every month. You can then take that nest egg of profit and invest it into ads to scale something with more leverage at the same time, giving you the best of both worlds. You’ll have the safety net and the massive upside, but you’ve done it the right way.

So, that's my opinion on how to start Drop Shipping if I were to do it all over again. I hope it helps!
