If you’ve been trying to make consistent sales on Etsy and feel like you’re just not getting enough traffic, you’re not alone.
The good news is you can profitably get more sales WITHOUT spending hours tweaking your listings or praying for organic traffic to pick up.
So if you’re looking to increase your sales on Etsy, it really comes down to two main strategies. Since most sales come from on-site search traffic, you can either:
Scale horizontally by adding more products. This helps you show up in a wider range of search terms and reach more customers since you’ll have more products optimized for different keywords.
Run Etsy ads to boost your visibility and get more sales consistently.
How Etsy Ads Work
Etsy ads are a lot like Google Ads. By running ads, your products show up at the top of relevant search results. For example, if you sell a “funny koala bear t-shirt,” and someone searches for “koala bear” or “bear shirt” on Etsy, your product can appear at the top. This only happens if you’ve optimized your product with the right titles, descriptions, and keywords.
The great thing about Etsy ads is that you only pay if someone actually clicks on your product, not just for showing up in search results. So it’s pretty much a no-brainer to include ads in your strategy.
Now, when you’re starting out, it makes sense to rely on organic traffic to keep costs low. But once you have a few designs up and some experience, it’s worth experimenting with ads to scale faster.
And learning how to jumpstart new listings with some ad dollars can really get the snowball rolling for those designs…and your sales overall.
THE biggest factor that goes into etsy search rankings is SALES. Not title or description SEO…not price…it’s what’s ACTUALLY selling on the platform.
Those other things matter of course and DO factor in, but Etsy’s a business at the end of the day. They want to suggest products that are proven to convert people (which is why some ad dollars in the beginning can shortcut your way to the top of search rankings).
If you’re just starting out, I recommend running ads on all your products initially. Then, as you gather data, you can optimize from there.
The key is patience. Don’t panic if you have a bad day or constantly check your ads every 10 minutes. Turning ads on and off too quickly will waste money and stress you out. You need to let them run so Etsy’s algorithm can test different search terms with your products.
Optimize Your Ads Over Time
As you start getting more data, you’ll notice that even if your overall campaign isn’t profitable right away, some individual products might be. Let your ads run until you’ve spent about 3-4 times the profit margin of your product. For example, if your product profit is $10, wait until you’ve spent $30-$40 before deciding if it’s worth keeping the ad running on that product. This gives Etsy enough time to optimize and find the best keywords for your product.
Once you have enough data, turn off ads for products that aren’t converting and double down on the ones that are. This will eventually turn your campaign into a sales machine that’s only spending on profitable products. And it’ll be the snowball effect that your WINNERS need to get more and more sales in the beginning….leading to more and more sales organically in the future as well (since they’ll naturally be ranked higher).
You should also consider increasing your budget too. I know this can make some people uncomfortable, but it’s definitely helped my ads sort out the winners from the losers faster.
Let’s say Etsy caps your budget at $25 per day. Your goal should be to reach that cap as quickly as possible. If your budget cap is $200 per day, aim for that too. Here’s why:
In my experience, Etsy doesn’t usually spend your entire budget unless your products are getting clicks from relevant searches. So, even if you set it high, you’re not wasting money in most cases.
The higher your budget, the more visibility your products get in search results. This leads to more potential sales.
Etsy increases your budget cap as you consistently spend, so it’s a good idea to build trust with them by steadily increasing your ad spend. If you’re doing it right, the more you spend, the more profitable sales you’ll make.
Remember though, it’s all about patience, optimizing your ads, and scaling up your budget wisely. Here's a video explanation of exactly how to do all this for more insight...
